Overheard on Christmas Eve

Welcome to Sally's book-a-day-for-2017 blog. If unfamiliar with the blog, scroll down.

Overheard on Christmas Eve (Post 134)

Overheard on Christmas Eve (2014), is a short story published years ago by a newspaper and again in 2014 as part of the lovely book Once Upon a Christmas. The story is a conversation between a Tasmanian Devil and an angel. The little devil is uneasy because of the trouble his species is in, and also its reputation. A third character joins the conversation, the thylacine, calling from its uneasy place between reality and legend. The angel has comforting words for both. I always liked this story, which is why I was so pleased to give it a second run. I usually prefer to write new stories rather than recycle older ones, but this one fitted the brief. I was extraordinarily lucky to score Lisa Stewart as the illustrator. As you see from the second picture she drew the most sublime little thylacine ever.

Once Upon a Christmas is in print, and can be bought via this link as well as through other retailers. It's a beautiful anthology, put out by Christmas Press.

About the Blog

Sally is Sally Odgers; author, manuscript assessor, editor, anthologist and reader. She runs http://www.affordablemanuscriptassessments.com and Prints Charming Books. (Sally is me, by the way, and I am lots of other things too, but these are the relevant ones for now.)

The goal for 2017 is to write a post a day profiling the background behind one of my books; how it came to be written, what it's about, and any things of note that happened along the way. If you're an author, an aspiring author, a reader or just someone who enjoys windows into worlds, you might find this fun. The books are not in any special order, but will be assigned approximate dates, and pictures, where they exist. If you enjoyed a post, or want to ask about any of my books or my manuscript assessment service, leave me a message.
