Budgie Rock

Welcome to Sally's book-a-day-for-2017 blog. If unfamiliar with the blog, scroll down.

Budgie Rock (2001) Post 153

Budgie Rock is another of those little books that was bang up to the minute when it was published sixteen years ago but which is, in its way, more dated now than books from the 1980s. Nicky's budgie, William, loves music. He likes to watch TV with Nicky, but he's interested only in music programs. His favourite show, and Nicky's, is video Rock, hosted by an effervescent character named Spike. When the music videos roll, William dances to the beat.

Dad thinks this is fun and invites the neighbour, Ms Lee, to watch. Ms Lee tapes William on her camcorder, and when Spike announces a brand new opportunity for a new star, Nicky sends in William's video as a joke.

William's video wins, and Nicky and Dad sign the contract for William's star-making career. Alas, someone from the studio arrives to take William away... naturally, Nicky is not allowed to visit and Dad regrets letting her sign the contract. Eventually, the news breaks that the second-place-getter will be a star, because William hasn't rocked a beat since leaving Nicky.

Back comes William and soon he's rockin' away with Nicky once again.

William the budgie is named after my daughter's budgie, William Woad Wallace. WWW liked music, as lots of birds do. The story is a little bit of a cautionary tale about reading the fine print...

About the Blog

Sally is Sally Odgers; author, manuscript assessor, editor, anthologist and reader. She runs http://www.affordablemanuscriptassessments.com and Prints Charming Books. (Sally is me, by the way, and I am lots of other things too, but these are the relevant ones for now.)

The goal for 2017 is to write a post a day profiling the background behind one of my books; how it came to be written, what it's about, and any things of note that happened along the way. If you're an author, an aspiring author, a reader or just someone who enjoys windows into worlds, you might find this fun. The books are not in any special order, but will be assigned approximate dates, and pictures, where they exist. If you enjoyed a post, or want to ask about any of my books or my manuscript assessment service, leave me a message.
